2Hollis's "Gold" Is A Foundation For What's To Come

If you had told any random Opium kid just one year ago that Ken Carson would be uplifted on his tour by a supporting act that focused on a hyperpop/EDM sound, I think it’s safe to say that you would have been called crazy. But, that’s just what 2Hollis has done. Coming fresh off of Ken’s tour as an opener, 2Hollis has rallied the Opium troops and built a fanbase of his own, all while remaining entirely in his own lane. A lot of critics look at Opium and artists in a similar realm as “copy-paste” acts: The production all sounds similar, the heavy autotune distorts most nuances between peoples’ natural vocals, and the mumble aspect can often lead to lyrical confusion. That being said, the music is just as much about the energy as it is the substance, and with Opium’s grip on the entire underground culture (not just limited to music), there is no telling how far their influence is capable of stretching. 2Hollis came out of the woodwork with a sound that is not necessarily conventional for your typical Ken Carson crowd. That being said, the energy is exactly where it needs to be. He can dance across a stage, he knows how to control a crowd, and his music ignites just as many moshpits as any other artist in rap right now. All of those factors were in full effect on Ken’s tour, leading to videos of his opening sets being plastered across socials, and before we knew it, 2Hollis was widely accepted within the underground.

2Hollis’s new track "Gold" blends his signature rage sound with strong EDM and hyperpop influences, creating a high-energy experience like many of the other heavy hitters in his discography. Known for experimenting with distorted beats and angelically autotuned vocals, "Gold" takes these elements further. Accompanied by a beautiful music video, Gold has quickly racked up over five hundred thousand streams on Spotify alone in just a few days. The video was shot in a warehouse-type environment, and it feels rough around the edges. I say that not in a negative light, as the production quality is extremely high, but rather the video does not try to do too much. It feels authentic, it feels true to life, and it feels inherently 2Hollis-coded. There is something so mysterious about 2Hollis that keeps fans intrigued, waiting on the edge of their seat for his next release. The industry has not seen an artist carry themselves the same way that 2Hollis does, while also delivering the music that he is more than capable of creating. While “Gold” is clearly a standout track in 2Hollis’s catalog, each release shows that he is willing to push the boundaries even further than he did the last time. That is why with this release, it only makes me increasingly excited about what is to come, and where 2Hollis is going to take his listeners next.
