Raq Baby just released his newest album “Spill Season,” following his album titled “Abstruse” which dropped earlier this year. Spanning seventeen songs, this forty minute project puts Raq Baby’s skillset on full display. His melodies are able to create an extremely strong skeleton for the project, and the bars between them fill out the album to completion. If you have yet to tap into Raq Baby, this project is a great place to start. Today’s scene feels saturated and it feels like we are hearing the same stuff over and over again. With Raq Baby and “Spill Season,” he is making the statement that artists with an identifiable voice and unique delivery are still present and applying pressure. 

Raq Baby first ended up on my playlists after his song “Man of the Year” which dropped at the top of 2024. Although it was relatively recently, I noticed that he had been making music for a solid few years before then. His discography feels, for lack of a better term: real. His voice has been consistent throughout every track back to the very beginning, and he has fine tuned his pen and beat selection to the point where Raq Baby can put together a cohesive album. On “Spill Season,” listeners get a bit of each side of Raq Baby’s artistry. Songs like “Helmets for Hats” are chilled out and allow him to tap into his melodic side, while songs like “We On Dat” give Raq Baby the tempo he needs to bar out. Wordplay and flow switches are a common in every verse across the project. All the while, Raq Baby allows the listener to track the story he’s telling, or the message he is delivering.

Raq Baby is far from the end of his journey, and this second full length project in a single year is proof that he is still just as hungry as he was when he first picked up the mic. As he continues to further discover his sound, fans can expect an even greater refinement of the world that Raq Baby is building through his music. It’s rare to find an artist that genuinely sounds different today, and don’t get me wrong, Raq Baby has some clear influences. That being said, he isn’t biting anyone’s sound. Rather, he works to understand why it made them great, and emulates that in his own unique way. Raq Baby is a name that you need to know.
